History

Sherwood Park, originally named Campbelltown, was founded by John Hook Campbell and John Mitchell in 1953 when the Municipal District of Strathcona No. 83 approved their proposed development of a bedroom community east of Edmonton. The first homes within the community were marketed to the public in 1955. Canada Post intervened on the name of Campbelltown due to the existence of several other communities in Canada within the same name, so the community’s name was changed to Sherwood Park in 1956.

Punk rock (or “punk”) is a rock music genre that developed in the early to mid-1970s in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in 1960s garage rock and other forms of what is now known as “proto-punk” music, punk rock bands rejected perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. Punk bands typically produced short or fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through informal channels.

The term “punk” was first used in relation to rock music by some American critics in the early 1970s, to describe garage bands and their devotees. By late 1976, bands such as the New York Dolls, Television, and the Ramones in New York City, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned in London, and The Saints in Brisbane were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. Canadian Headline News – First snowflakes could fall on Toronto this Thursday


Say it ain’t so.

Wintry weather is coming to Toronto this week and Environment Canada is predicting freezing temperatures plus a chance of flurries starting on Thursday night.

That means it’s time to haul out the winter gear: mittens, woolen hats, scarves, boots and snow shovels. And if you haven’t done so already, it’s time to put on winter tires on your vehicle.

The federal weather agency says the chance of flurries will continue throughout the weekend and end by Sunday night.

It says there is a 40 per cent chance of flurries on Thursday night, when the low is predicted to be minus 8 C.

Hurricane Irma news – slams into Caribbean as Florida awaits storm


At least two people died in the islands of St. Barts and St. Martin, officials said. A third death was an infant in #Barbuda, officials there said.

— It’s too early to tell whether it will make landfall on the US mainland. Computer models show it could churn near Florida’s east coast by late Sunday, and forecasters warn the core could hit the Florida peninsula.

— The tropical storm force wind field from Irma stretches over 300 miles from end to end. If it were centered over New York City, the tropical storm force winds would stretch from Baltimore to Boston.
